I'm a new father and between balancing the career, family & social obligations I'm really struggling to find time to play. Since Christmas I've made it through the second mission (where Franklin and his buddy steal the two cars and deliver to the dealership). Been looking forward to this game forever, and am feeling so much anxiety to play that I almost wish I never got it.
Anyways, to the sepcifics:
1) I just want to explore the map in single player (not interested in GTA online). What am I missing (aside from plot, excitement, $$$ etc) by not doing the missions? Are there vehicles or skills or other things I won't have access to? Is the parachute and scuba gear available right off the bat? Do you have to take license tests at some point to fly (wasn't GTA:SA like that???)?
2) For those of you with limited time to dig into this game, are you finding short stints frustrating?

When the Lester missions come up down the line pay very close attention to what he says about to stock market in the game and move your money accordingly ..

You aren't missing much online.... this is how it goes: log in, load game, select online, wait, spawn, get shot immediately by a person with a pistol from 6 miles away and die, you will respawn next to this person and they will continue to kill you for no reason until you log off. YAAAAYYYYY....NO

I went hard on the story mode in the first month, but that's only because I could. I don't think short stints would crimp your style, unless you're talking like 10 minutes every other day.
That said, unlike other GTA games the entire map is explorable from the start. Your main problems are going to be health and weapons (you're probably noticed the cops are lot more determined to kill you, and can headshot you) - but there's an invincibility cheat code and another code that gives you the basic weapons and ammo to get you going.

Also, no restrictions on vehicles, provided you can find them.

honestly, it's probably going to be a single 60-minute stint each weekend if I'm lucky.

Do the missions. The story is written to allow you to experience each aspect of the game as the missions progress. Once you beat the final mission, the Union Depository robbery, each of your characters will have about $25 million dollars to spend on cars, planes, tanks, and businesses that can offer additional benefits and missions. Also, online is awesome. You can option to simply jump into a random lobby for a race, deathmatch, etc. to level up and earn money quickly.

Rather, save the Lester missions until you've finished the game. Your final heist will yield close to $25 million. Then move the Lester cash around for each player, and you'll net just over $1.1 billion after all the Lester missions, per player.

Also save the Lester missions for last, since that'll be when you have the most cash.

To get a sub, you have to buy a dock, which comes in around halfway through. And the scuba gear is only available from the boat that is at the dock you buy. You also have to buy the airport hanger if you want unrestricted access to the airport. You won't have access to the merc jeep for one, I don't know of any other vehicles you can't get right off the bat.

It's a great game for people that don't have much time. Story mode is short, sweet and quite easy, plus not really necessary to enjoy the game. Almost everything is unlocked from start -99%- and there's no need to take license tests, unlock parts of the map or anything.
Lets put it this way: my first death was eaten by a shark in the opposite side of the map. Did story mode after some time, which is about earning money, showcasing the game's features and having a connection with at least one of the characters (Michael is my favorite).
As for online, I only played it 15 minutes and got bored. Seems unfinished to me.

I just tried Online last night; I was pissed off by the time I went back to single-player.
A bunch of 9-year-olds repeatedly attempting to kill my character, combined with practically nobody willing to collaborate on a mission, have really killed my enthusiasm for Online. At least with GTA IV , things like Team Deathmatch could be entered outside of Free Mode and had plenty of people willing to participate until they moved on to newer mainstream games.

It's for this very reason I spend most of my free roam time in passive mode. Doesn't work when you're in a car, and you can still get run over on foot though.
If you're on XBL, my gamer tag is raphael5 (might be a space before the 5). I'm down to do some missions as I'm having the same issues and is a long grind only doing the ones you can do by yourself

Thanks for the offer, but I'm on PS3. I haven't tried out passive mode yet, but I am going to have to find a better way to earn cash and level up since I'm only Level 4 IIRC.

Get a buddy and a helli and rob every store ever. Also, every 45 minutes or so you can sell a vehicle to los santos customs. SUVs bring good money.
